My wife, Brenda and I went to Saving Grace on the Simply Serve day ready to serve and we ended up being served. Before arriving, I dropped our son’s car off at a shop for a brake job. Brenda was busy working with a group of ladies stocking the library with books, videos and helping decorate the area. I worked with a couple of other guys to paint a hallway. While in the middle of painting I received a call from my mother who lives at an assisted living facility in Bentonville. I am sort of her caretaker. She reminded me of some things she also needed help with that day. Shortly after that, I also received a call from the auto shop that my son’s car was ready to be picked up. I really senced a nudge that I needed to leave our project for Saving Grace to pick up the car, test drive it to check out the brakes, go over to my mother’s to help her and then, I would be right back. After finishing what my mother needed, I took the car back home for Brad. While we were talking in the living room, we both heard a small “boom” that came from the garage. By the time I made it over to the door, we both heard the sound of rushing water. I ran into a sight of water gushing from the top of our hot water heater. With a great sence of what to do that only comes from years of experience, I quickly reached up and turned the water off. We sucked up excess water with my shop vac. After surveying the damage, I called Brenda and told her I was sort of in a deliema. We both decided I would go ahead and come back over and finish the day giving service to Saving Grace and take care of the water heater afterward. After all, Lowes stays open late. The only other challenge I had was the fact that I am pretty hot water heater installing challenged. The thing here is that we have a great friend who is a master plummer, Brad Hines. He and his wife Julie were the reason our small group was able to get involved with such a great new ministry as Saving Grace. By the time I got there, Brad already knew about my need and jumped to the task. We hopped in his truck, went over to the house and after his professional diagnosis, we were in Lowes attempting to decide which water heater I should get. With Brad’s willingness to serve and expert ability, we had the problem solved in no time. Even though this was sort of an expensive deal for us, I can’t help but believe I was being nudged by the Holy Spirit through a call from my mother and then from the auto shop. This all made it possible to be in our home just at the right time so that I could do what was needed to avoid some major damage to our home. Brenda and I went to serve and ended up being served. We intend on finding more spots to serve but our only hope is that nothing else happens when we do like our air conditioner going out or something.
